The answer to one question indicates that the drawer depth is 8-1/2", but the height of the entire unit is 12-1/2". What makes up the other 4"

The 12 1/2" is including the skids attached to the bottom of the pack. The end of the drawer (end with handle) is higher which allows the drawer to close tightly with the body of the pack rat. That side of the drawer measures 9.8" high.
